I decided to play the Minimalism Game or #MinsGame in the month of February. If you don’t know what this is, you can read all about it on The Minimalists’ site here. Basically, it’s a minimalism game/challenge to help you get rid of the excess. As you know, I already live fairly minimally. And, after Christmas we had a huge purge of items.
So, playing the game in February was a personal challenge to myself.
I wanted to see how many days I could last and more importantly, how many items I could eliminate! My #MinsGame Disclaimer: don’t get rid of stuff for the sake of it. Seriously. And, don’t get rid of items that you love because you feel obligated to own less. That completely defeats the purpose.
The purpose of minimalism is to make room in your life for MORE freedom and mental peace.
I only made it through day 18, but I still let go of 171 items (what?!?). It was an awesome challenge and I highly recommend it! Here’s a breakdown of everything we let go of, and some inspiration of what YOU can get rid of, too.
Purging 171 items in 18 days with the Minimalism Game:
DAY 1: An old blanket. We have too many, and never use this one.
DAY 2: Empties. Why weren’t they trashed earlier?!
DAY 3: An old towel, and 2 dresses that are too small
DAY 4: Shorts, shirt, jeans, and a sweater
DAY 5: Makeup I won’t use and an expired bath bomb (gross, I know!)
DAY 6: Old towels, the cloth bag our sheets came in, and a lamp we don’t use
DAY 7: Pillow cases, another old towel, dried out nail polish, duplicate aloe gel with a broken dispenser
DAY 8: Pillow, candy, t-shirts
DAY 9: Romper, jeans, candle, drink koozie, reindeer antlers for the car, socks
DAY 10: Empty perfume, expired bug spray + sunscreen, dried up glue sticks, cards, 2 more candles, a pencil holder, and some paper clutter
DAY 11: Coloring books, wallet, sunglasses, lipstick, pen + highlighters, empty gift cards, hair ties, an extra charging cube
DAY 12: Ponchos, broken makeup, a broken umbrella, hanger, envelopes, random container lid, masks
DAY 13: Wire basket, water bottle, paper clutter, oats, jewelry, a sticker, car water bottle coaster, dog collar, robe, Monopoly
DAY 14: Used up notebook, old SD cards, a flash drive, pen, tin containers, extra heart rate monitor band
DAY 15: T-shirts, travel bottles (I know I won’t clean them), wrapping paper (our only roll and I don’t want to move it), pouch, receipts, random cable, hair clippers (from the one and ONLY quarantine cut)
DAY 16: Poster board, air freshener, scissors, glue, tape, tools, rags, PJ pants, etc.
DAY 17: Pop-up changing tent, mop, water bottles, word search, old coupons, pencils, dog toys, candies
DAY 18: Tote bag, candy dish, iPad case, beads, a lanyard, more candies
The Minimalism Game was a success. 171 items were donated or trashed.
Who knew I had that many things lying around to get rid of?! Honestly, I’m proud I made it to day 18 and impressed with what all we were able to let go. What might you be able to let go of this week? What about this month? April could be your time to play the Minimalism Game yourself. Comment and let me know what you get rid of!
